Are you trying to decide between Eucerin vs CeraVe? Both brands were created by scientists and dermatologists to provide solutions for different skin conditions. This post is a comparison between CeraVe and Eucerin to determine which products are best for dry skin types.

Eucerin is a much older brand compared with CeraVe. It started in a pharmacy in Hamburg, Germany in 1882 when a pharmacist started making medical dressings.

In 1900 this evolved into a skincare company called “Eucerit”, which means “the beautiful wax” in Greek. The company was the first to ever create a formula containing a stable water-in-oil emulsion.

CeraVe by comparison is a much more recent brand. It was founded in 2005 by dermatologists who recognised that patients with conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis all had a compromised skin barrier.

They began developing products which contained skin-identical ceramides to help restore and protect the skin’s natural barrier. Their three core products, the Moisturising Cream, Moisturising Lotion and Hydrating Cleanser were launched in 2006.

Both Eucerin and CeraVe work with scientists, pharmacists and dermatologists to create skincare products that are backed up by research. They are both recommended by doctors to treat a range of skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis.

CeraVe and Eucerin both make body washes that contain different ingredients. I have compared two body washes from each range that both target dry skin. The comparison table below gives a brief overview of each product.

If you suffer from eczema, the best body wash for you is the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser. Out of the four body washes it is the only one which has achieved the National Eczema Association seal of acceptance. This means it is free from all ingredients that are known to irritate eczema or sensitive skin.

If you have very dry skin that is often itchy, the Eucerin Skin Calming Body Wash is a great choice. It has an oily consistency, and contains natural ingredients such as soybean oil and castor oil. These oils are rich in fatty acids which help to soothe itchy skin, and improve the skin’s moisture levels. The formula is both fragrance and soap free and won’t cause skin irritation.

If you prefer to use a body wash that foams then you should choose either the Eucerin UreaRepair Original Body Wash or the CeraVe Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser. Both would be a good choice for dry and sensitive skin. They each contain different ingredients which help to protect the skin barrier. The main difference is the Eucerin body wash is a gel whereas the CeraVe wash is a cream.

The best choice for eczema sufferers would be the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion since it has the seal of acceptance from the National Eczema Association. The formula contains hyaluronic acid which helps to hydrate the skin, and ceramides to protect the skin barrier. This is a great option if you want a daily lotion that’s light and won’t leave any greasy residue. It can be used as a facial lotion, or on the entire body.

The Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion contains ingredients which may irritate eczema prone skin. These include urea and lactic acid. It is, however an excellent lotion for extremely dry skin, since it contains ceramide 3 which strengthens the skin’s barrier, and Natural Moisturizing Factors which hydrate the skin and prevent dryness. The product is free from fragrance, dyes and parabens, and suitable for sensitive skin.

Both products are a great choice if you want a lighter weight cream to combat dryness. If you have eczema, CeraVe has the slight edge over Eucerin since the CeraVe lotion is free from all ingredients that could inflame eczema.

CeraVe also doesn’t contain any ingredients which could inflame acne. The Eucerin lotion on the other hand, contains shea butter which may block skin pores and cause blemishes.

Both CeraVe and Eucerin make a thicker version of their lotions, which comes in a cream formula and is packaged in a tub. The comparison table below shows the basic differences between each product.

The key ingredients in each of the creams are the same as in the lotions, with CeraVe containing ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and Eucerin containing ceramide 3, NMFs, and shea butter.

Both creams contain ingredients which may, in some skin types inflame acne. The Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream contains shea butter, and the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream contains petrolatum (also known as petroleum jelly). If you have dry skin that is prone to acne, you would be better off choosing the CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion, than one of the thicker creams.

If you have eczema prone skin, the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream would be your best choice. For very dry skin that is not prone to eczema, either cream is excellent since they both hydrate the skin and protect the skin barrier.

Either product can be used as both a body moisturizer or as facial moisturizers, and both contain essential ceramides to strengthen the skin.

CeraVe Vs Eucerin Facial Moisturizers

Although the CeraVe and Eucerin lotions and creams can be used on the face, both brands also make facial moisturisers. Eucerin make a light and gentle face cream that’s formulated for dry to very dry skin. It contains urea and lactate which help to restore moisture to dry skin. This would be a good option if you have dry skin and want a simple daily moisturizer to wear under makeup.

Since it contains lactic acid and urea in the ingredient list it may not be suitable for eczema prone or very sensitive skin. The Eucerin moisturizer also does not contain a sunscreen, so would not be suitable to wear outdoors all day.

The CeraVe AM Facial Moisturising Lotion is a lightweight moisturiser that’s designed to provide all day hydration to the skin whilst strengthening the skin barrier. It’s non comedogenic, so it won’t clog the pores, and is suitable for both dry skin and acne sufferers. The active ingredients in this cream include hyaluronic Acid, ceramides, and niacinamide. Niacinamide is known to help smooth fine lines, and reduce uneven skin tone and large pores.

Unfortunately neither of these moisturizers have received the seal of acceptance from the National Eczema Association. In my opinion the CeraVe cream has the slight edge over Eucerin due to the sunscreen.

CeraVe Vs Eucerin Night Cream

CeraVe and Eucerin both make slightly richer facial creams that are more suitable for nightcare. The comparison table below looks at each product side by side.

We can see that both brands use the same key ingredients in their night creams as they have in their day creams. Although both products are designed for dry skin, the CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion has an oil free, non comedogenic formula and won’t cause acne flare ups. It would work well on both dry and oily skin. The Eucerin night cream however, is not oil free since it contains castor oil.

The Eucerin Replenishing Face Cream is a great product if you have dry skin along with fine lines, redness, rough patches and scaly skin. The formula contains urea and lactate which not only replenish dry skin, but also help to remove dead skin cells and smooth roughness.

The CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion contains niacinamide to soothe and calm the skin, whilst ceramides and hyaluronic acid restore the skin barrier. It’s a good choice for normal skin, oily skin, or to soothe dry skin conditions.

Eucerin Vs CeraVe for Eczema

When it comes to treating eczema, CeraVe is the clear winner over Eucerin. CeraVe has won more seals of acceptance from the National Eczema Association than any other skincare brand. This means that many of their products are completely free from any ingredients that could aggravate or inflame eczema prone skin.

Both brands, however, make products that are designed for eczema prone skin. The two products I would recommend are either the Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Cream, or the CeraVe Eczema Relief Creamy Body Oil.

Cerave Vs Eucerin Baby

Both CeraVe and Eucerin produce gentle skincare and haircare products for babies. Currently Eucerin have a slightly larger range, and product specific products for babies with eczema. The products available from each brand are listed below.

The Eucerin Baby Eczema Relief Body Cream is one of the brand’s most popular baby products. It contains colloidal oatmeal to help calm dry, itchy, and irritated skin. The formula is fragrance, dye and steroid free, and is suitable for babies of 6 months or older.

Eucerin vs CeraVe for KP

KP is an abbreviation for keratosis pilaris, which is also known as “chicken skin”. KP is a condition where keratin builds up in the hair follicles and causes small bumps to appear on the skin. These bumps usually appears on the upper arms or thighs, and make the skin appear rough and bumpy.

Both Eucerin and CeraVe make products that target rough skin, and smooth out bumps. The two products that I would recommend to target KP are either the Eucerin Roughness Relief Lotion or the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream. The comparison table below shows a brief overview of each product.

Both creams contain urea which is an alpha-hydroxy acid that works well at breaking up keratin plugs and smoothing the skin. The CeraVe cream also contains salicylic acid which is a beta hydroxy acid that helps to remove dead skin cells and clear out the pores.

Compared to the Eucerin Roughness Relief Lotion, the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream contains more exfoliating ingredients. The Eucerin cream on the other hand is slightly more gentle and contains shea butter to nourish and soothe the skin.

Either product works well to help combat keratosis pilaris. Both are suitable for everyday use, and also work as an effective moisturizer for dry skin conditions.
